Church of Espírito Santo, Évora
The organ of the Church of the Holy Spirit in
Évora, despite its small size, has a quality characteristic
of those made by Cavaillé-Coll.
It benefits from the wonderful acoustics of the building, and
because it has been maintained faithful to the original harmony
up till the present day.
It was completely restored by the organ maker
Dinarte Machado. The organ of the Church of the Holy Spirit remains
the equal of that in the Church of St. Louis the French in Lisbon,
and is the best example in Portugal of the genius of the French
organ maker, the centenary of whose death was celebrated in 1999.
The World Monuments Fund Portugal Association
is delighted by the successful conclusion of the project involving
the organ of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Évora, because
it returns to the city and the community an important and indispensable
instrument for musical enjoyment. It will be used during concerts
and religious ceremonies, and will take up its educational function
once again, in conjunction with the University of Évora.
The World Monuments Fund Portugal wishes to express
its thanks and its privilege to have been able to rely on the
interest, motivation and the indispensable financial contribution
from the Guincho Club.
