Cloister of Jeronimos Monastery
A complete survey and investigation was done
of the stonework and jointing, documenting the many changes and
deterioration that had taken place. The appropriate methods and
materials for the cleaning and conservation of this major work
of world art and culture, containing a profusion of original decorative
iconography were assessed.
The principle objectives of the conservation
project for the Cloisters of the Jeronimos Monastery were
the general cleaning of all existing residues and other sources
of deterioration and future protection from further environmental
decay.
The cloisters of the Jeronimos Monastery is an
original architectural element of great iconographic wealth. Its
long and rich history dates
from 1517. The cloister has a particular significance for the
Portuguese.
It is symbolic of the era of the Portuguese Discoveries,
when significant cultural and political events took place. A modern
example is the signing of the Treaty of Adhesion by Portugal to
the European Union.
