Mission
Since its foundation in 1965, the World Monuments
Fund has fought to stop unnecessary loss of works of art and architecture,
taking on the role of leadership in their preservation.
The WMF is the only private non-profit organisation
devoted to the conservation of monuments, and has been successfully
involved countries in all parts of the world.
Crossing all geographic, cultural, and national
barriers, the WMF projects vary from the restoration of the "Church
of our Savior & Rostov Veliky Historic Center" in Russia
to the northeast of Anatolia, restoring churches whether they
have suffered from wars or earthquakes.
As a consequence of the efforts of the WMF, a
brighter future approaches for the Foundation, and also for many
other important and irreplaceable monuments which form the world's
cultural heritage.
However, much remains to be done. Destruction
in the name of progress, war, natural disasters, negligence, uncontrolled
tourism and other threats continue to cause damage. The loss is
irrecoverable.
