World Monuments Fund Portugal is an affiliate
of the World Monuments Fund®,
a New York-based international non-profit, whose objective is
the restoration of monuments and historic buildings, and the conservation
of the national heritage.
The first project of World Monuments Fund-Portugal
was the cleaning and the conservation of the stone exterior of
the Belem Tower. This pioneering and exemplary work involved Portuguese
and foreign technicians. The project, which was begun in 1997
and successfully completed in 1998, received the Europa Nostra
Prize in 1999.
In the same year the restoration of the organ
of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Évora was completed,
and the restoration of the Jeronimos Monastery Cloisters began.
The later was completed in 2002.
Amongst the projects in progress is the conservation
of the gardens of Palácio de Queluz, Funchal Cathedral
and tha Houses of Vasco da Gama.
