Tower
of Belém
Work categories
The works were divided into four main categories:
- structural work;
- cleaning phases;
- treatment of the joints and surface repairs;
- other operations and treatments.
Structural Work
Initially, unstable fragments were collected and catalogued.
These components were afterwards put in place with epoxy resin
and the cracks finished with the same rendering to match adjacent
areas.

Large unstable components, which were out of
place or broken, were realigned and structurally reinforced where
necessary.
The works on the Archangel St. Michael in the
NE corner involved a search of the sea bed around the Tower to
find a part of the left wing that was broken and lost in 1994.
After a few attempts the piece was recovered.
During the survey it was discovered that the
sculpture was displaced relative to its base, and had become unstable.
The piece was replaced in its correct position.
